The Famio 8 is a compact black-and-white general-imaging console from Toshiba’s Famio line, and it shares its transducer generation with other Toshiba systems of the same era. Toshiba’s prefix system is the fastest way to identify any probe you encounter in a listing:

The models most often quoted against the Famio 8 are the PVM-375AT, a 3.75 MHz convex probe that handles routine abdominal and obstetric work; the PVM-651VT, a 6.5 MHz endovaginal transducer for gynecology; and 6–7 MHz class linear models such as the PLT-604AT for small-parts and superficial imaging. The frequency is encoded in the model number — 375 reads as 3.75 MHz, 651 as 6.5 MHz, 604 as 6 MHz — which lets you screen unfamiliar listings quickly. Sourcing When the OEM No Longer Sells New
Canon Medical (which absorbed Toshiba’s ultrasound business) does not supply new Famio-generation transducers, so supply comes from three channels:
- Tested used probes pulled from decommissioned Famio and related consoles. This is the largest pool. Condition varies widely, which makes testing evidence more important than listing photos.
- Refurbished units, where a workshop has replaced the lens, cable or housing on a probe with a healthy array and documented the work.
- Repair of your own probe — often the cheapest route on a legacy platform where good replacement stock is finite.
Whichever channel you use, require a per-element test report before shipment. Electronic probe testing drives each element of the array individually and records its sensitivity, so dead elements and weak zones appear as objective numbers rather than a seller’s opinion of image quality. On probes of this age, that report is the difference between buying a working transducer and buying someone else’s problem. Repair or Replace Your Famio 8 Probe?
Repair typically runs 30–60% of the cost of a replacement probe, with a standard turnaround of 5–10 working days, and it covers the failures these probes actually develop: worn or delaminated lenses, cable conductor breaks, damaged strain reliefs, connector faults and small numbers of dead elements. Replacement is the better call when a large portion of the array is dead or fluid has reached deep into the housing, because rebuilding an array approaches the cost of a tested replacement. For the PVM-651VT and other endocavity probes, treat any cut or delamination on the insertion section as disqualifying for clinical use until repaired — that is an infection-control failure, not a cosmetic one. One wider scenario is worth naming: if the console itself and several probes are failing at once, price the total against a used current-generation system before spending further on the fleet. A single probe repair on a working Famio 8 is easy to justify; three probe purchases on a console with no parts support may not be.
Acceptance Checks Before Clinical Use
When a probe arrives — used, refurbished or repaired — verify it before it enters the patient schedule. Inspect the lens and cable jacket for cuts and delamination. Connect it and confirm the console recognizes the probe and displays the correct model. Scan a uniform target and look for vertical dropout lines, which indicate dead elements. Flex the cable along its length while scanning; image flicker under flex means conductor damage. Confirm the warranty in writing — months, not weeks, covering the array.
